Who Wrote The Quran?

Zayd ibn Thabit ( d. 655) was the person to collect the Quran since “he used to write the Divine Inspiration for Allah’s Apostle”. Thus, a group of scribes, most importantly Zayd, collected the verses and produced a hand-written manuscript of the complete book.

The Qur’an was not written by any human; Muslims believe it is the direct word of God (Allah), revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel).

Who wrote the quran?

How Was the Qur’an Recorded?

While Prophet Muhammad did not write the Qur’an himself (as he was illiterate), it was preserved in several ways:

  1. Oral Memorization:

    • Prophet Muhammad recited the revelations to his companions.
    • Many of them memorized the Qur’an completely (Hafiz).
  2. Written Records:

    • Scribes, such as Zaid ibn Thabit, wrote the revelations on materials like parchment, bones, palm leaves, and leather.
  3. Compilation into a Book:

    • After the Prophet’s passing in 632 CE, the first Caliph, Abu Bakr (RA), ordered a written compilation.
    • Later, the third Caliph, Uthman (RA), standardized the Qur’an to ensure it remained unchanged.

Is the Qur’an Authored by Muhammad?

No. Even non-Muslim scholars agree that Prophet Muhammad did not claim authorship. Instead, he conveyed it as divine revelation, saying:

“It is nothing but a revelation sent down to him” (Qur’an 53:4).

Muslims believe that because the Qur’an is perfect in language, wisdom, and consistency, it could not have been written by a human.
